I indulged in the story a bit, and my rendition doesn’t quite sound like the one in the original book. That’s how it sounded to me when I read it. But it’s a beautiful book, a speedy read, and highly recommended. You will get many simple insights that will sustain you throughout your financial journey.

In Arkad’s Rags-to-Riches story, the fact we need to take away is that the money we earn doesn’t automatically stay with us. We must give it away to different people regularly—the landlord, grocery store, utility company, and various other merchants.

The money has to go out of your pocket for you to survive. However, if you don’t prioritize the portion of the money that goes to yourself, and only focus on the money going to everyone else, that’s no good.

You’re skipping the most important payment. Your money will be constantly directed toward everyone else in perpetuity. Very rarely will anything ever be left over for you.

Remember, Arkad was a simple man with no special skills or background, yet he managed to acquire wealth in a manner that nobody could imagine because he sought advice from the right source.

For myself, this lesson became the foundation for me to go from having very little money saved and no money invested, to having a lot of money saved and growing my first significant investments.
